Small Roof Clues Worth a Second Look

Roof trouble tends to start quietly. A faint ceiling stain or a handful of grit in the gutter often shows up months before water reaches a room, so these four are good to check from the ground.

  • Curling shingle edges
  • Stains on a ceiling
  • Grit in the gutters
  • Daylight in the attic

Match the Fix to the Problem

A worn roof does not always need replacing, and a leak is not always a quick patch. Here is how the three main options differ.

Leak and Shingle Repair

Right when the trouble sits in one spot, such as a lifted shingle or cracked flashing by a vent.

Roof Replacement

Makes sense once patches keep piling up. Old layers come off and new shingles go down in turn.

Homeowners on How Their Roof Turned Out

“A brown patch kept growing across my den ceiling. The cause was loose flashing at the chimney, and I saw photos of it before any repair began. That ceiling has stayed dry through every downpour since.”

“Once the hail passed, I assumed my whole roof was finished. An honest inspection showed only the back slope had taken a beating, so that side got new shingles and the front half stayed just as it was.”

Debbie Carlson

Hail-worn back slope

“My old roof had been patched so often that it looked like a quilt. The replacement was explained to me one stage at a time, the yard got swept for nails, and the new ridge now sits perfectly straight.”

Roof Questions Worth Asking

Most hold up for around two decades, and some go longer with good attic airflow. Strong sun and hail shorten that. Age alone is no reason to replace a roof, so I judge it by the shingles themselves.

Sometimes, if there is a single layer and the deck is sound. I rarely suggest it, because a second layer hides soft wood and traps heat. Tearing off lets me see the decking and fix weak boards first.

It tends to grow. Water runs along rafters and soaks insulation, so the damp spot indoors can sit far from where it got in. Set a bucket under it, take a photo, and have the roof looked at soon.

Walk around the house and look up from the ground. Shingle pieces in the yard, dented gutters or dark patches on a slope are all worth a photo. Stay off the roof itself, above all while it is wet.

A stuffy attic bakes shingles from below in summer and gathers damp air in winter, and both wear a roof out early. Intake at the eaves paired with exhaust at the ridge keeps the deck dry.
